Savvy, passionate, and frantically desolate, Holden is the embodiment of an untrustworthy storyteller. He is fixated on death, particularly the passing of more youthful sibling Allie. Holden endeavors to introduce himself as a skeptical, savvy, and common individual. Ackley. Ackley is an understudy at Pencey Prep. Holden cases to scorn him, yet there are clues that Holden sees Ackley as a variant of himself. Stradlater. Stradlater is Holden’s flat mate at Pencey. Certain, attractive, athletic, and well known, Stradlater is everything Holden wishes he could be. Phoebe Caulfield. Phoebe is Holden’s more youthful sister. She is one of only a handful not many individuals that Holden holds in high respect. Holden sees Phoebe as savvy, kind, and honest right around a perfect person. Allie Caulfield. Allie is Holdens late more youthful sibling, who passed on of leukemia before the beginning of the account. Significant Themes Guiltlessness versus Phoniness. Fake is Holden’s affront of decision. He utilizes the word to depict a large portion of the individuals and spots he experiences. To Holden, the word suggests stratagem, an absence of legitimacy, and claim. To Holden, phoniness is a manifestation of adulthood; on the other hand, he sees the guiltlessness of youngsters as an indication of genuine goodness. Estrangement. Holden is disconnected and distanced all through the whole novel. His undertakings are reliably centered around making a type of human association. Holden utilizes distance to shield himself from joke and dismissal, however his dejection drives him to continue attempting to associate. Demise. Demise is the string that goes through the story. For Holden, demise is dynamic; what Holden fears about death is the change that it brings. Holden consistently wants for things to stay unaltered, and to have the option to return to better occasions when Allie was alive. Scholarly Style Salinger utilizes naturalistic, slang-imbued language to reasonably repeat the voice of a high school kid, and infuses the portrayal with filler words to loan it a similar musicality as the verbally expressed word; the subsequent impact is the feeling that Holden is disclosing to you this story. Holden is additionally an untrustworthy storyteller, telling the peruser that he is the most breathtaking liar you at any point saw. Thus, the peruser can’t essentially trust Holden’s depictions. About the Author J.D. Salinger was conceived in 1919 in Manhattan, New York. He burst onto the scholarly stage with the distribution of his well known short story, A Perfect Day for Bananafish in 1948. Only three years after the fact he distributed The Catcher in the Rye and cemented his notoriety for being probably the best creator of the twentieth century. Superstardom didn't concur with Salinger, and he turned into a hermit, distributing his last story in 1965 and giving his last meeting in 1980. He passed on in 2010 at 91 years old.

Starch Lab Free Essays

Krupa Desai Cell Biology April 3, 2013 Lab: Biosynthesis of Starch Introduction: In this lab we learned the concept and procedure of synthesizing starch. We also learned the effects of pH and temperature on the reaction rates of amylase.. We will write a custom essay sample on Starch Lab or any similar topic only for you Order Now In the process of the synthesis lab we learned phosphorylation using a potato, which was what we synthesized. The phosphorylation took place after the addition of primer. There are two different types of starches used are amylose and amylopectin. To test for the presence of starch, the Starch Test is used. This is a simple test in which iodine is added to a given solution. If a polysaccharide such as starch is present then the iodine ion will lodge itself in the polysaccharide chain and give it a black-blue color. If iodine added to a solution turns black-blue than starch is present. If the solution remains the color of iodine, reddish-orange, there is no starch present, a negative test. In our experiment we scale the color we see in comparison to the neutrals to test for the amount of starch. Since we were trying to get exact times the drops could have splattered over into another part of the dish and contaminated some of the other tubes overall our data is fairly accurate however tube 7 had the most phosphorylation because it turned from blue to black over time. Some of the other tubes although had the presence of starch did not alter much over time in fact most stayed the same. Additionally it is concluded the pH and temperature greatly effect the reaction rate of enzymes. How to cite Starch Lab, Papers

Nightmare World Essays - Nightmare, Alfred Hitchcock,

Nightmare World Analasys of Nightmare World By Luke Miller In the essay, Nightmare World by Stanley J. Solomon, he talks about how a horror film is a safe place to confront fear and violence that pervades our life. Its the fear in our minds that we have, and it is the fear that we can release by watching a scarey movie. One thing that he doesn't discuss that I wish that he would have, is how he doesn't get into any different medias. Stanley J. Solomon really elaborates very well about how the American scarey movie is a great place to really let our fears out. It is a safe contained atmosphere where nothing physically negitive can happen to you. The scarey movie is really a rarity in todays society if you look in the past, there might not be as many scary movies, but in ratio to todays movies it is a lot higher. Just because therre is a lot more junk on the silver screen today. The visual images in a scarey movie really represents our fears in our minds. Like the huge shark in Jaws is a evil image that represents fear in our minds. But it is the fears in our minds that needs to be realeased. And that is where the horror film comes into play, giving us a safe enviornment to watch and release those fears. As compared to going out o a boat and trying to get as close as you can to death. For on reason it is a lot cheaper to spend your 6 dollars at a movie theater, compared to hundreds or thousands out on a boat in the unpredictable atomosphere of the ocean. One person that could really bring out fears that lurk in the Nightmare World of our head, was Alfred Hitchcock. He would use a couple different kinds of danger to scare the veiwer. He would use the kind where the person that is going to get murdered doesn't even know that it is coming, but yet the veiwer can see it clear as day, and the viewer can almost predict how the victim is going to get murdered. The second type that Alfred Hitchcock was really great at, is where everyone knows that the victim is in trouble including the victim. It is really just a waiting game, as to when and how he/she is going to get killed. In most of these situatoins it is a helpless young attractive female who knows the killer is in her house and is just waiting to get slain. One movie that really portrays this well is the Scream triligy. On thing that Stanley J. Solomon never got around to in his essay is other forms of media that could be used to get into our own Nightmare World. He talks about how only movies can get our endorphons going, but what about a good book? I know that when I get involved in a good book that I totally block out everybody and everything else, just to focus on the book. One thing that a book can do for you, or you do it for yourself, is that with a book you can read the discription of the character, but you get to picture him/her in your own way in your head, which might let you get rid of some of the gears that we might have built up in our heads. Another media that really is just now getting exposed is books on tape. They let you totally relax to a reader which might even be the author, describe the story in his/her own thought and voice. Thus letting you totally relax into the story and hearing it the way that it was ment to be. This method of media would also allow you to release the hor rors of your own Nightmare World. All together many different things contribute factors to our nightmare world. But most importantly, we can release all of these fears in the safe envirnment of our own heads. English Essays

Personal respect is also very essential at the military level. It is by respecting oneself that he or she will be able to show others and earn respect too. As a unit, the military appreciates the effort of each and every member hence this reduces the chances of having disrespectful individuals. Therefore, issues of disrespect tend to be very minimal in the military.

Let the T-Shirt Speak!

Let the T-Shirt Speak! Everyone loves cool T-Shirts! And the more personal it is, the better it looks on you. You want it to be unique, unlike those boring brand T-Shirts bought on sale. So, if you do not want to shop and buy, you need to create one. However, figuring out how to design the perfect T-Shirt that adequately reflects your character and preferences is no simple task. Fortunately , in this article we’re going to give you some tips to help you on your journey to T-realization. Enjoy! Think Anthropomorphically What animal are you? What’s your â€Å"totem† animal? What animal or critter speaks for who you are or could stand for your cause? What animal would make the perfect mascot on your T-Shirts? Now, once you figure out the animal it’s time to give it a little personality through its body language and facial expression. While it definitely takes some finesse, furry brand icons can work magic with T-shirts without having to say or do much. Think about it. Approach it Like a Marketer Not only do you want to like your t-shirt, but it wouldn’t hurt if others found it pleasant as well. That is unless your goal is to be a walking eye-sore (more on this in a sec). Of course T-Shirts are T-Shirts are T-Shirts, but there are a few essentials to keep in mind: Fit: If they fit well, they look better (unless someone’s rocking a huge beer gut or something). Don’t get so lost in the aesthetic phase you forget that if it doesn’t fit, the design doesn’t matter. Placement: Where you place words and graphics means everything, and no, it doesn’t have to be in the typical spots. Be creative! There are no rules when it comes to placement. Fabric: It makes huge difference! Play with as many options as possible to see what will compliment your statement or t-approach the best. It’s not from afar that people fall in love with T-Shirts, but up close and personal. Use Minimalism to Make Grand Statements Absolutely no one really likes loud T-Shirts. Those are the kind of shirts we wear in the privacy of our own dorm rooms, or to the lake or something. When the T-Shirt matters, it should speak eloquently and elegantly without really saying much. Get it? Keep statements tight and graphics under control. It’s Not All about YOU! The way we view ourselves and our T-shirts fades away in comparison to how others view us and our T-Shirts, right? Besides, once out and about they’re a part of the landscape and people will be subjected to them whether they like it or not. At the end of the day it’s about the human being inside the gentle folds and stitching that matters. Think about it before you print something outlandish or gaudy. Again, minimalism always makes the grandest statements both in word and in terms of graphics. Keep your eye on the ball and remember that if the T-Shirt sucks, you aren’t going to look cool in it either most likely. Humor and Tact Should be Subtle Irony and silence are the keys to humor. Irony is often soft-spoken and incredibly easy to grasp. That’s why it’s so freaking hard to create fictional irony! Think about the little quips and advertising slogans that seared themselves into your mind over the years. What do most of them have in common? They’re creative and often ironic ways of presenting or looking at certain information. Subtlety. Tact. Humor. These are the types of slogans and sayings that people can choose to get behind and wear literally on their sleeves. It’s about making people do two things: think and smile. We’re Not in the 60’s Color. It can be your best friend or your fierce enemy. It can attract the eyes or shun them. It can engage the mind or completely turn it off. It can dazzle and confuse. You must walk a fine line between choosing a color that works by itself given the style of the shirt, and a color that works with the wording and graphic design. No one said it would be easy. However, following these tips will lead you to creating the formula of your best and most personal T-Shirt, unique and one of its kind. The practice will save your backside. Good luck with your Ts!

Movie Project (about Hang Over 3 movie) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Movie Project (about Hang Over 3 movie) - Essay Example However the Wolfpack team is abducted by a drug lord who later holds Doug as a security for the other friends to search for Chow who had disappeared with Marshall’s gold (IMDb np). The interpersonal concepts of communication revealed throughout the film are: failure and mending of relationships; tension relief mechanisms through humor. Also the theory of communication privacy management is used to explain the concept of interpersonal communication (Berger 415-447). This will be the pivotal concepts that this paper will focus on and analyze; then a description of their application in the film will be done and evaluation of their effectiveness or ineffectiveness in the plot of the movie; and analysis of the immediate and future application of these concepts in relationships. Relationship deterioration is the mainly apparent seen concept in the movie Hangover 3. According to Joseph DeVito (2008) his explanation of deterioration is â€Å"the stage (in a relationship) that sees the weakening of bonds between the parties and that represents the downside of the relationship progression,† (DeVito 212). This is clearly revealed in the introduction scenes of the movie. Alan purchases a giraffe and later inadvertently kills it in a bridge, which causes a vehicle jam. This news doesn’t concur well with his father who has always termed him as an irresponsible person. It may be seen that these two have not been having good relations from the past as his father reacts furiously. This scene simply shows us there is a breakdown of communication or simply relationship deterioration. This concept of deterioration of relationships is perfectly incorporated in the movie. As seen from the above scene its applicability is good and it follows the same trend in the rest of the movie. We not only see the bad relationship between Alan and his father, but also its severe consequences. The

Handling the Issues of Rage and Murder in Poetry :: Education for Leisure The Hitcher Poems Essays

Handling the Issues of Rage and Murder in Poetry The two poems I am going to analyse are 'Education for Leisure' by Carol Ann Duffy and ' The Hitcher. These poems both have potentially dangerous speakers. The first line of 'Education for leisure' contains murderous feeling, this grabs the reader and submerses them into the poem. "Today I am going to kill something. Anything" The poet uses direct and powerful words, by using the word 'something' instead of 'someone' the poet makes it unclear what the speaker wants to kill. In 'Education for Leisure' the speaker thinks that his readiness to kill makes him somehow smarter then anyone else. This is shown when the speaker says; "I am a genius..." The speaker seems to kill for killing sake. This sadism is shown in line five when the speaker says; I squash a fly against the window with my thumb. We did that at school. Shakespeare." This can be interpreted in two ways, one way is that killing and Shakespeare can be associated with boredom. The other way is a line from 'King Lear' By William Shakespeare "As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods; They kill us for their sport." (4.1.57-58) Carol Ann Duffy uses this a another way of symbolising the speakers delusional view that he is a God. The poet reinforces the point that the speaker is delusional when he says; "The cat avoids me. The cat Knows I am a genius, and has hidden itself." The speaker thinks here that the cat thinks he is a God and has hidden out of fear, he thinks the whole planet revolves around himself. The speaker also thinks he is famous. " I dial the radio and tell the man he's talking to a superstar. He cuts me off." By now the speaker is probably getting very frustrated, he then takes a drastic step. "I get our bread-knife and go out. The pavements glitter suddenly. I touch your arm." By saying 'your arm' instead of 'someone's arm' Carol Ann Duffy brings the reader into the poem by making the point that people like the speaker do exist and this sort of thing could happen. The speaker in 'The Hitcher' is observably feeling very depressed. "I'd been tired under the weather," The speaker is presumably mentally ill, he picks up a hitcher "...in Leeds" One difference 'The Hitcher' has to 'Education for Leisure' is that in 'The hitcher' we know someone is killed. "I let him have it on the top road out of Harrogate - once with the head, then six times with the krooklok in the face..." even though we're not directly told that the hitcher is dead it's

The benefits of sward renewal

Philip Creightonl, Michael O'Donovan2 and Laurence Sha11002 Grassland Science Research Department Animal ; Grassland Research and Innovation Centre Teagasc Athenry and Moorepark2 Introduction Grassland in Ireland including rough grazing accounts for over 90% of agricultural land use. Lolium perenne (Perennial ryegrass) is by far the most widely sown grass species accounting for over 95% of forage grass seed sold each year. It produces a dense sward, highly acceptable to livestock with the ability to produce high dry atter yields, especially in spring and autumn reducing the seasonality of production.Achieving good performance from grass is dependent on having high quality perennial ryegrass/clover swards. This paper will outline the important aspects of reseeding pasture, what's happening at farm level, why and when reseeding should be completed, its benefits and costs. What is happening at farm level? A recent survey of a proportion of co-op suppliers from Kerry, Connaught Gold and Glanbia (Creighton et al. , 2011) found a number of significant findings from a eseeding perspective, these are listed below. i. v'. ‘x.Regular reseeding took place on 50% of participants farms, 25% reseed infrequently, 25% never reseed. Of those reseeding, 50% of participants reseed 2-4ha/year, 20% 8. 0 Soil K Index 2 3 4 Soil K ranges (mg/ 0-50 51-100 101-150 > 150 K application rate (kg/ha) 110 75 50 Slurry is a good option to maintain nutrient status. With the increased cost of compounds (P and K) slurry should be used in reseeding, 1000 gallons of slurry at 7% DM is equivalent to 4kg N, 3kg P and 19. 5kg K. At soil index 3, slurry (3000gals/ac) is sufficient to supply the P and K nutrients.Weed control The best time to control docks and all other weeds is after reseeding. By using a post emergence spray seedling weeds can be destroyed before they properly develop and establish root stocks. Established weeds can seriously reduce the yield potential and economic lifetime of the reseeded sward. From the survey information it is clear that only 50% of farmers are applying a post emergence spray, resulting in over 90% of surveyed farms having problems with dock infestations. To ensure that a post emergence spray can be applied reseeding should be targeted for the spring or early autumn when establishment conditions are much more suitable and the opportunity for weed control is guaranteed. The post emergence spray should be applied approximately 6 weeks after establishment Just before the first grazing takes place. With weed control it pays to be proactive, spraying when grass is at the two leaf stage works well. Grazing management of reseeded swards Care needs to be taken when grazing newly reseeded swards. The sward should be razed as soon as the new grass plants roots are strong enough to withstand grazing (root stays anchored in the ground when pulled). Early grazing is important to allow light to the base of the plant to encourage tillering. Light graz ing by animals such as calves, weanlings or sheep is preferred as ground conditions may still be somewhat fragile depending on establishment method used. Grazing new reseeds with larger animals can create high levels of tiller pulling. The first grazing of a new reseed can be completed at pre grazing yields of 600-1000kg DM/ha. Frequent grazing of the reseeds at light covers (

Effects Of Eyewitness Testimony On The Us Criminal Justice...

Midterm Paper: The Effects of Eyewitness Testimony in the US Criminal Justice System On December 14th, 1982, Marvin Anderson was sentenced to 210 years in prison for crimes that he did not commit [1]. He was charged with rape, forcible sodomy, abduction, and robbery; these convictions were largely due to the eyewitness testimony made against him at trial [2]. During the investigation, a collection of photos was presented to the victim, where Anderson’s photo was the only one in color. Then, in a line up 30 minutes later, Anderson was the only one brought in whose image was shown to the witness in the original array. Unfortunately, the witness then identified Anderson as the perpetrator, which acted as very convincing evidence in the†¦show more content†¦Despite knowing the unreliability of eyewitness testimonies, investigators still narrow in on suspects identified by these witnesses. To explain the effects of eyewitness testimony one can examine a few conditional pro babilities: Prob(Police investigate all leads/Eyewitness testimony) Prob(Police investigate all leads/No eyewitness testimony) Prob(Correct person convicted/Police investigate all leads) Prob(Correct person convicted/Police do not investigate all leads) Thus depending on specific numerical probabilities, it follows that: Prob(Correct person convicted/Eyewitness testimony) Prob(Correct person convicted/No eyewitness testimony) Of course, eyewitness testimonies are not always unreliable and often can be crucial in correctly identifying the perpetrator of the crime, thus these premises and conclusion are not to be taken at face value, but as a way to conceptualize bad bias from eyewitness testimony. Mistaken eyewitness testimony causes a large amount of bad bias by shifting focus onto one specific defendant. With all the focus on one defendant, many cognitive biases come into play, such as confirmation bias and belief perseverance. If a witness passionately claims that someone committed the crime, investigators are likely to mold evidence to fit the case against that defendant, instead of identifying an alternative suspect whoShow MoreRelatedFalse Witness Credibility : Mistaken Eyewitness Identification1231 Words   |  5 PagesWu Professor Harris ENC 1102 1 Dec. 2016 Research Project for False Witness Credibility: Mistaken Eyewitness Identification On May 3, 1982, in Norfolk, Virginia at circuit court, 29-year old Julius Earl Ruffin was convicted of a rape he did not commit and was sentenced to five life sentences in prison.
